This is also known as the 'Master Cleanse' because it is meant to help thoroughly cleanse your insides and remove unwanted toxins from your body. Advocates of the diet are often happy to do this ten day diet several times a year at least. It was first introduced by a naturopath, Stanley Burroughs, who brought the diet to paper in Hawaii in 1941. So it's been around for a very long time. You can read up about it on the internet or buy one of the many books on the subject.

The diet itself is simple and made up of only four ingredients. For one glass you need 10oz good quality water, 2 tablespoons of freshly pressed lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of good quality maple syrup and a pinch of cayenne pepper. You should be drinking six to ten glasses of this lemonade every day, ten days long. That's it! No solid food but you can drink water and herbal tea as well. It is said that this lemonade has all the nutrients your body needs.

I have done this several times. I didn't get hungry but I got bored and kept thinking of 'real' food. Doing this for ten days gives your body the necessary time for the toxins to be eliminated and to clean your intestines. The lemonade diet is easy and cheap. Make sure the ingredients are as fresh and pure as possible. If you can't manage the whole ten days, then do what you can. Every day is good. There are people who decide to incorporate this into their daily lives and do it once a week. It's up to you. Don't stress yourself about it.

Go and visit your doctor before you embark on the diet. This diet isn't for you if you have diabetes, cancer, gallstones, high blood pressure or intestinal issues. Keep away from it if you have an eating disorder or if you are underweight. Children, pregnant or nursing mothers should also give it a pass.

If you decide to go on the lemonade diet, cleansing and detoxing can mean that you feel a bit nauseous along the way. This is often because the toxins are now going through your body on their way out. The same applies if you get headaches. If the nausea or headaches continue, please see your doctor.

If you feel the lemonade diet could help you, then do give it a try. It's great if you do it for ten days but any day on the diet is a day you are helping your body cleanse itself.
